So we took a trip to the States yesterday to do some shopping. I needed some spring/summer clothes for the little lady, and wanted to hit up Kohls for some wonderful sales, and they never disappoint...but more on that later.
I brought a backpack full of toys, books and snacks, but it appears as though all I needed to bring was the portable DVD player with about 10 episodes of Caillou.

The girl didn't make a peep the whole way (just over an hour), plus a 35 minute wait at the border. We didn't hear a word out of her until her little flirtations with the border guard. One would assume that she would be ignored by a stoic person being paid to guard the borders of our neighbouring countries. Not so when you're Maisie, apparently!!
I knew she was going to say hello to the guard, because she says hello to everyone, and I was worried that her feelings would be hurt if she went ignored. But the American border guard spoke to her directly, and even used her name. She loved it, and when she said goodbye and waved, he smiled and waved back at her and said "Bye Maisie". Never in my life have I ever seen anything like it! It was precious. Warms the heart, really. She's such a social little butterfly. Wants to be everyone's friend.
Next stop was Olive Garden for lunch, where we met up with Kathy and Lindsay who had spent the morning shopping. We had a bit of a wait for our table, but it was a gorgeous day so we all waited outside where Maisie enjoyed a little frolic in the rock garden.

Once seated, she was even excellent through lunch (which was a tad slow moving). By this point, it was about 2:00 which is already an hour past the time she would normally be in bed...and we hadn't even started shopping yet. But she was still going strong...ate chicken fingers, broccoli and two apple juices for lunch, and did a lot of colouring.
Then, it was off to Kohls. I got about 12 adorable outfits for her, ranging from skirts to shorts to capris, all with cute little tops...everything 50% off. Mom bought her a couple of outfits and a ladybug dress. Not to mention the little singing camera. I still have to get a picture of her with that. She says "Just like Mommy!"...guess Mommy has the camera in front of her face a lot lately!
As we were paying, it appeared as though Miss M was starting to fade, and I think we got out just in time. But once cozy in her seat again with her soosie and her Caillou DVD, all was well again. She was all chill and fine during our 15 minute wait at the Canadian border, and when we got up there, the window of the booth opened to a stern looking woman. I was in the back with Maisie and thought "Ok...here's where she gets ignored". Then Maisie said hello and started laughing. Well, guess what...the formerly stern customs lady cracked a smile and said hi to her and then said "Well, doesn't that just make your day...a cute little girl laughing. You just can't not smile". She said she was so cute, and I said to Maisie "Are you cute?" to which she replied "Yes" and started laughing again. Then the guard said "That's right Maisie...own it", and she let us go. It was amazing...twice in one day! It's nice to see your little girl bringing the same joy to others that she brings to us daily.
So, since it was way past nap time, I figured she might have one in the car. And she did. About 15 minutes before we got home.
By the time we got everything unloaded, and got her in the house the poor thing was pretty ticked off. And she worked a pretty short fuse for the rest of the afternoon. So we went outside. I figured there was more room for her tantrums out there than in here!
Today is another beautiful day, so we spent the morning outside. Amazing how great of a nap that leads to! Speaking of which, it sounds like I am being beckoned from upstairs, but before I go, I wanted to share this picture from this morning...
This was her first time tackling her cereal by herself, at her little table. She did a great job!
